Carey made her debut for New South Wales shortly before her 18th birthday in 2010-11 and showed maturity above her years, scoring a match winning 36 not out. The allrounder was made to wait for her Australian debut; she was a late call-up to squads for the 2012 and 2016 T20 World Cups, on both occasions due to injury, but did not debut at either event. Carey's big break finally came on the 2018 tour of India, when she broke into the Australian XI, and she featured in her third T20 World Cup in the Caribbean later that year. She went on to become a consistent member of the national team, helping Australia win the 2020 T20 World Cup and the 2022 50-over World Cup. Carey now calls Tasmania and the Hobart Hurricanes home, after making the big move away from New South Wales and the Sydney Thunder in 2019. Carey missed selection for the 2023 T20 World Cup in South Africa, and shortly after turned down a national contract, citing a desire to focus her attention on domestic cricket. The move paid off, with Carey taking her all-round game to a new level, dominating for Tasmania throughout their three-peat before helping the Canes win their first WBBL title, while also starring in domestic leagues in the UK and India. Her domestic form was so strong that it proved irresistible for the national selectors, who recalled her for the white-ball matches against India in early 2026.
