Player Story

From a labourer struggling to make ends meet to an international cricketer, the journey of Nathan Ellis is one of extraordinary dedication and persistence. Raised in Sydney, Ellis relocated to Hobart in 2017 in search of an opportunity at the next level having dominated NSW Premier Cricket by taking 160 wickets at 22 in four seasons. A consistent contributor for the Hobart Hurricanes since his debut in 2018, the right-armer quickly became one of the competition's best death bowlers with twin weapons of an excellent change of pace and pinpoint yorkers. On the shorter side for a quick, making his deliveries skid on, he has earned multiple stints in overseas T20 leagues where he has impressed for Hampshire (T20 Blast), London Spirit (Hundred) and Punjab Kings (IPL). He made an instant impact on T20 international debut for Australia with a hat-trick against Bangladesh in 2021, also earning an ODI cap in Pakistan in 2022. With opportunities to represent Australia limited behind a generational pool of talent, Ellis initially had to bide his time, called up for his first World Cup role at the 2024 T20 event in the Caribbean. While he has also enjoyed success with the red-ball at first-class level after making his debut for Tasmania in 2020, his overseas and international opportunities have come exclusively in the white-ball formats, helping him earn a Cricket Australia contract for 2024-25 after being upgraded during the previous season. Ellis was appointed Hurricanes captain ahead of BBL|13, replacing Matthew Wade, and captained the side to the BBL|14 title in January 2025.
