Player Story
It is to cricket's great credit that Jonny Bairstow decided to follow in his father's footsteps and play the game professionally rather than either rugby or football. He was installed at the Leeds United football academy for seven years and could have made it. Instead he took up a place at Yorkshire and hasn't regretted the decision. With a shock of ginger hair he is called 'Bluey' by teammates like his dad, former Yorkshire and England stumper David was 'Ron Weasley' of Harry Potter fame. Bairstow's Test debut came in 2012 and he featured in four of the five Ashes Tests that followed in 2013. On his day one of the most destructive batters in world cricket, Bairstow became a central figure in England's white-ball rise leading into the 2019 ODI World Cup. His Test batting took off in 2022 as well in stunning fashion, smashing six centuries in 10 matches that calendar year. Now a 100-Test veteran, Bairstow will perhaps be remembered best by Australian fans for walking out of his crease during the 2023 Lord's Ashes Test, and being stumped by 'keeper Alex Carey.
