Long earmarked as a player to watch, Sutherland made her debut for the Melbourne Renegades in the WBBL at age 15, going on to make her Victorian debut in the WNCL. She then made the switch to the Melbourne Stars, and her early potential was rewarded with overseas tours with the Australia Under-19s and a spot in the National Performance Squad. But the Victorian allrounder's big break came in early 2020 when she made her T20I debut against England in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup. She ended that tournament with a World Cup winners' medal around her neck, and added a Baggy Green to her collection in 2021 when she made her Test debut against India. Sutherland was part of the Australia side that went undefeated in the 2022 one-day World Cup in New Zealand, and at the 2023 T20 World Cup in South Africa. But it was at the Ashes that Sutherland truly announced herself on the international stage. After dominating with the bat at domestic level in recent seasons, she translated that to the highest level when she scored her first Test century batting at No.8 at Trent Bridge in the 2023 Ashes. Her first ODI century came against Ireland a month later. Sutherland made headlined around the world in February 2024, when she rewrote the record books scoring 210 batting at No.6 in the one-off Test against South Africa at the WACA Ground. Later the same year, she hit back-to-back ODI tons against India and New Zealand, then became the first woman to have her name put on the MCG century honours board with a Test hundred in the 2025 Ashes, which Australia whitewashed 16-0. A few days later she won her first Belinda Clark Award.
